County, state and national elections are held in even-numbered years. Primary elections are held on the first Tuesday after the second Monday in August. General elections are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
City and School Board elections are held the Tuesday after the first Monday in November in odd-numbered years.
On an election day, all polling places are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
To vote in any election in Minnesota you must be:
• a citizen of the United States • at least 18 years of age on election day • a resident of Minnesota for at least 20 days • properly registered
Pre-registration, for those who are not currently registered, closes 20 days prior to any election. You may pre-register by downloading, completing and mailing in a voter registration application or completing one in person at the Scott County Elections Office. To have a voter registration application mailed to you, please contact the Scott County Elections Office at (952) 496 - 8560.
Eligible voters may register at the polls on election day with one of the following authorized proof of residence:
- A valid Minnesota driver's license or learner's permit (or receipt) showing a current address in that precinct.
- A valid Minnesota identification card (or receipt) showing a current address in that precinct.
- Prior registration in the same precinct with former name or address shown on the roster.
- A mailed notice received from the County Auditor's Office indicating an insufficient registration.
- Notice of late registration sent by County Elections.
- Tribal ID card that shows name, current address, signature and picture.
- A photo ID (MN driver's license or MN ID with former address; U.S. passport; U.S. military ID; MN student photo ID from a post secondary institution; Tribal ID with former address bearing name, signature and picture) with current bill showing voters name and current address (i.e. utility bill due within 30 days of the election; student fee statement; rent statement dated within 30 days of election day that itemizes utilities).
Registration is permanent provided you vote at least once every four years and do not change your residence or name.
Absentee voting is permitted because of absence from the precinct, illness, disability, religious discipline, observance of a religious holiday, or service as an election judge in another precinct. Download an application or obtain one in person from Scott County Elections, 200 4th Avenue W during regular business hours. Absentee applications and ballots must be received no later than the day before the election. Absentee ballots will be available 46 days prior to the election. Absentee voting is not available at City Hall.
The City of Shakopee is looking for election judges for the Aug. 14 Primary Election and the Nov. 6 Presidential Election. Election judges help the voting process run smoothly on Election Day. They greet voters and verify they are in the correct polling place, register voters, obtain signatures, give out ballots and show how to use the voting machines.
Election judges are paid $8.75 per hour. To serve as an election judge, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old on Election Day, a Scott County resident and attend a two-hour paid training session. To learn more, please call 952-233-9316 by June 15.
